Birthday Fun

Sunday, March 7th, 2010 I turned 33. This year I almost forgot about my own birthday. It seemed to sneak up on me and before I knew it, it was here. That's the thing about being over 30. Birthday's aren't all that exciting anymore. It's not like when you are younger and birthday opens up a whole new world of fun. Age 10 "Sweeeeet I'm in the double digits!" Age 13, "OoooOh I'm a teenager!!", age 16 "Yes! I can DRIVE", age 18 "I'm officially an adult and my ass can be both drafted and or jailed", age 21 "I can LEGALLY drink, and hopefully my ass will stay outta jail as I celebrate".

Then there's 30. Once you're 30 all the monumental birthdays from that point on mean you are closer to being wrinkly and decrepit. The only age I can possibly image looking forward to now is 65. Hopefully by then I'll be able to retire.... although with the way people talk it sounds like my generation and the generations after mine will NEVER be able to retire. We'll be working straight through to the grave.

Wow... depressing.

ANWAY, on a lighter note, I had a wonderful birthday despite it being an uneventful 33. My friend Jon turns 30 in a couple of days so this past Saturday we combined my birthday party with a 30th birthday bash for him. A ton of people came and we had a blast. The next morning, after my hangover receded, we hopped into the car and drove two and a half hours out to Buffalo to the Anchor Bar. The Anchor Bar is hailed as the birth place of the original chicken wings. Thankfully they were delicious and worth the drive.

Speaking of the drive, on the way out the weather was beautiful, Kayla had just fallen asleep, the music was playing and we were cruising along enjoying the great day. When we got pulled over.

We got a ticket for going 82 mph in a 65 mph zone. In Rudy's defense, the lane he was in was ending and the car next to us sped up so Rudy tried to compensate to go around it, but yeah it didn't quite work out. Just as he pulled in front of the other car a state trooper came down the on ramp and pulled us over.

Little Kayla didn't even wake up. Thankfully we have a wonderful friend that is a lawyer so we didn't let the ticket put a damper on our day. We continued on our way and had a fabulous lunch.

I have a ton of photos to post from the party and from the trip to the Anchor Bar but I'm not in the mood to work on them right now. Hopefully I'll have them done tomorrow so check back in you're interested.

I LOVE To Read

Every since I was little I've loved books. The other night, after a few glasses of wine, my girlfriends and I were talking about some of the books we remember from our middle and highschool years. I used to love Ramona Quimby books.

{image credit mulattodiaries.files.wordpress.com}

Do you remember those? They were written by Beverly Cleary and I read every last one of them. As I got older I moved on to Babysitters club books. It was so weird because the other day when I picked Kayla up from her daycare there was a babysitters club book sitting on the shelf in her room. Just seeing the cover with those block letters brought back so many memories.

{image credit mulattodiaries.files.wordpress.com}

It was so funny because Missy, Christina, Annie, and I all remember reading them. I think it was Christina that mentioned the name Stacey, the girl in the book that had diabetes, and suddenly the 4 of us were trying to remember the names of the other main characters in the book. Oh babysitters club... those were so awesome.

After babysitters club I got into Sweet Valley High.

{image credit mulattodiaries.files.wordpress.com}

OMFG, sweet-f'ing-Valley HIGH! Elizabeth and her twin sister Jessica?? I swear, until the words "Sweet Valley High" were uttered the other night, I had COMPLETLY forgotten about those books. Which is so weird because I was such a bookworm, heck I'm STILL suck a bookworm, that I read every single one of them. I owned them all. I probably read each of them at least twice. I remember that they were a little more adult and at first my Mom was hesitant to buy them for me. But surely I begged her, and assured her they weren't that bad that she decided it wasn't a big deal. My Mom has always been one to encourage reading. I have so many found book memories because of her. Thanks for instilling such a wonderful hobby in me Mom.

To this day I'm a bookworm. On any given day I'm in the middle of reading something. Right now I'm reading "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson. When that's done I'll be sure to pick up something else. There are few times you find me away from my book. I'm just that kind of nerd I guess.

So what about you? What books do you remember from when you were growing up?

This is what we woke up to this morning, fresh snow, piled into 4 - 5 foot high snowbanks, thanks to our efficient highway department. Notice how clean the road is when all the snow is sitting in our driveway!

The snow was so wet and heavy that it broke part of my favorite lilac tree.

Poor little tree! Looks like I'll have a less lilacs in the house this summer. :-(

We don't own a snow blower but THANK GOD Andy does. He came over and helped dig us out...

Have you ever been dreaming, and in your dream you walk into a room filled with music? Music you've never heard before on the radio, or in your day to day life? Music that your brain just seems to instantly compose?

Isn't that WEIRD?

I had a dream like that the other night. In my dream I went to a symphony and the music they played was so beautiful. The kind of music that you listen to and it brings tears to your eyes. The kind of music that pulls at your heart and feels like it's a part of you. Every time I have a dream like that, when I wake up, I can only faintly remember the song. I struggle to hear it again in my head.... "la-de-daaaa".... I always wish I knew how to re-create it. If ONLY I knew how to get that music out of my brain and turn it into something real. But before I know it all of the notes have slipped away....

Big Girl Bed

Last week Rudy and I got our tax refund money from the Feds. Before having our taxes done we had already planned for some of it to go towards a big girl bed for Kayla.

When Yuna turned 3 she got to pick out her big girl bed. It's become our tradition that when you turn 3, it's your turn to walk into the store and pick out any bed you want. Which is SO much fun. Seeing their eyes get huge, and that moment when they are stunned, unmoving and unbelieving that Mommy and Daddy really said that they could pick out ANY bed they wanted. It's pretty cool. One of those memorable parenting moments that make me think "Damn I'm happy I have kids"

This is the bed Yuna picked when she was three.

{check out all of Yuna's big girl bed photos here}

I know, you don't even have to say it cuz I will for you. CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW LITTLE YUNA IS IN THAT PICTURE?!! awwww!

Now that Kayla is 3, it's her turn. The tax return money went into my account last week, so we brought Kayla out over the weekend to look at some beds and this the one she fell in love with:

Unfortunately it's on back order so she won't be getting it for another 3 or 4 weeks. But, oh my god, I love it as much as she does.

It's A LOT like Yuna's bed. It has both built-in drawers and bookshelves. I love that. You get a dresser, bookshelf, and bed in one. Our girls have really small rooms so anything that helps us save space is a good thing.

It's kind of funny because when Yuna was little, getting into her new bed was a challenge:

Kayla's bed however has that part figured out. It has a really cute little staircase built right in:

Yuna is a little jealous though. I tried explaining to her that they didn't make that bed when she was three, and if they did, YES she could have one, and YES I know she would've picked out THAT bed, and NO I do not think that her current bed is "really worn out and should be thrown away". I guess that's one of the downfalls of being the oldest child. You don't have to deal with hand me down clothing, but you do have to deal with advancements in... uh well in this case, "Bed technology". Whatever, bed technology is too a thing. I'm sure there's millions of dollars spent on bed technology ever year.

When it was time to leave the furniture store Kayla got really confused. She wanted to know how her Daddy was going to carry that big huge bed out of the store. She actually gave it a shove and said "uggh it's sooo HEAVY! How's it gonna fit in our car??" It was cute... until I had to explain that we weren't taking the bed home today. It would arrive in a big truck in a few weeks. She was so sad that she hung her head and actually cried on the way out. She didn't throw a fit or anything like that, she just silently wept while walking away. It was the most pathetic and adorable thing ever.

What's Up With The Name Yuna?

I can't wait until Yuna, my 6 year old daughter, is old enough to decide if she truly loves, or hates, her name. Her name has been a constant debate throughout my family. Rudy and my mom, although I wouldn't want to say they dislike her name, well, somewhat dislike her name. To be honest, it's grown on my Mom, but back when Yuna was younger, she'd only call her by her full name "Yuna Victoria" when she introduced her to someone. I think it helped take some of the weirdness out of it for her.

It's a unique name. Most of the time people either love it, hate it... or can't remember how to pronounce it. For the record, it's pronounced you-na, like the beginning of the word unicorn. The most common mispronunciation is Una "oo-na". I'm not really sure where people get that from, but it happens a lot.

When I introduce her, or she introduces herself, most people will wrinkle their nose and then ask what her name is again. Almost everyone is thrown off by "Yuna" when they first hear it. Half of the people will give me the polite smile and then the slow, drawn out "iiinteresting" or the "that's ... different" comment. Others seem to truly like it and want to know where it came from or how I came up with it.

Well there's two stories behind that.

The short story, that I tell to strangers or people I don't interact with very often, is that she's named after a special hibiscus flower that only blooms at night.

To the best of my knowledge that story is true. At least that's what the video game told me. Yes that's right, the video game. You see the REAL story is that Yuna is named after a character in the video game Final Fantasy X.

Yes I am a geek and I named my child after a video game character. But you know what? Considering the current technological age, I don't think it's much different than naming your child after a character in a book that you love. It's different, and since my name is Jennifer, I LIKE different. I bet most of you know a Jennifer. It was the #1 name for girls when I was born. I didn't want my daughter to have the same name as everyone else, like I did.

I gotta tell you, at first, I wanted to use the full name: Yunalesca. But everyone told me that it was bad enough I wanted to name her Yuna. Naming her Yunalesca would just be... mean. *Shrug* whatever, I liked it, but I eventually agreed that naming her Yuna was already, *wrinkled nose* - different, no reason to throw the world off it's axis by going with the full name.

So... there you have it. Yuna's unique name, explained. What do you think of the name?

Bacon Germs

I can be a bit of a germaphobe at times, but the other day after popping a half eaten piece of bacon into my mouth, I realized bacon germs are totally different than any other food germs out there. I should add that the half eaten piece of bacon I popped in my mouth was not 1/2 eaten by me.

I don't think twice about eating a bite of bacon that my husband or my kids don't finish. I don't think of it as disgusting. Maybe that's because bacon is salty and cured. It feels less germy than other foods. OK that's a lie. That's just how I justify eating someone else's partially digested food scraps. The real reason is that it's so damn good that I just don't care.

Yes, I would risk getting swine flu from the swine.*oink-oink*

It's not that I'm all about eating partially digested food scraps. Let's say you left an inch of your turkey sandwich uneaten. I wouldn't pick it up and eat it. That would be gross. But if there's an inch of bacon left on your plate, it's gone. In fact, you might want to keep an eye on it even if you do plan on finishing it.

Neglected bacon in our house quickly finds a home.

Zhu Zhu Pets - Cute but Impractical

After owning the zhu zhu pet hamsters for a while, I've realized, they're not all they're cracked up to be. Yes the kids love the idea of having their own mechanical hamster. At first, I will admit, they played with them a lot. But now that we've owned them for a few months, we've all become disenchanted. There are lots of little annoyances that come along with owning them.

A little hamster, running around on wheels, sounds SO cute... but when you stop and think about it... battery powered wheels and children's hair DO NOT MIX. There is a warning on the bottom of each hamster, and yes we warned our kids to keep their hair away from the wheels, but it didn't matter. Kayla learned the hard way when she picked up one of her hamsters and held it close to cuddle it when it was still in motion.

Whirrrrrrrr!!! Within seconds her long black hair was wrapping around the spinning wheels and she was screaming "WHY?!!!! I just wanted to cuddle you and now you're scalping me!!! AAAAHHH!!"

Great, now my kid has a bald spot. Thanks zhu zhu pets.

Sure, she learned her lesson, but that wasn't the end of the hair issues. One day, one of the mechanical buggers went scooting off under our TV stand. The hamster was yellow going in but it came out looking like a mini version of our cat Greddy. I don't care who you are, if you own pets there's always going to be spots where the pet hair decides to get together in hopes of forming a new pet and taking over the household. The zhu zhu pets somehow seek out those dark corners and knit themselves a fashionable winter frock while they're there.

Damn you zhu zhu pets!

Hair issues aside, some of the accessories are also CHEAP. I love the little fun house, but every single time I look at the little plastic garage, its falling apart. The doors DO NOT STAY ON that thing!! No matter what I do, next time I see it, it'll look something like this.

*Sigh* Every-darn-time. I'm starting to think super glue and duct tape are in order.

Then there's the big ball they are supposed to roll around in. At first I thought GREAT! A solution to the hair problem. The little hamster will be in it's own bubble world, nice and clean, and safe. Um yeah, no such luck. The hamster is always falling over in it. Once a hamster tips over he's down for the count. I have to pick the ball up, try and jiggle the hamster back onto it's wheels, then quickly put it back on the floor before the hamster reaches the other side and falls back down. Even if I do accomplish this task in time, 2 minutes later, he's fallen over on his own again.

Talk about annoying.

For all the time and energy I put into getting these things I really hoped they'd live up to the hype.
Zhu zhu pets, I'm sorry to say this, but you are turning into one big time FAIL.

Sup?

I don't know what's wrong with me lately. I have nothing but a pile of excuses to offer for why I haven't blogged. I can't time find to write, I have writers block, I spend so much brain power on computer stuff at work that I don't feel like spending quality time at home with the computer.

But they are all just excuses. I need to put aside some time and friggen WRITE SOMETHING!! So OK, let's see....

I could tell you about how I'm annoyed with Verizon's customer service. But I'm not sure if you want to hear me rant and bitch though. But trust me, I've got enough bitchin' in me to fill a whole PAGE. Yeah... no one wants to read all that.

What else has been going on? Well, Valentines day is coming up. I've always liked Valentines day, but I've never been into making a big deal out of it. OK I guess I can't say that because there have been a couple years where we went all out and celebrated. I remember having dinner at the Inn Between and they put had these cute hearts worked into all the food....

But for the most part I'm perfectly content getting a card, maybe a box of chocolates or some other small thing. Oh and I do like a nice dinner, but I prefer a dinner cooked by my husband. When it comes to flowers, I will admit, I love getting roses. BUT there's something about the complete RIP OFF going on for roses around Valentines day that makes me not want them. I tell Rudy every year, If you really want to get me flowers, wait till Feb 15. I feel sorry for the guys that feel like flowers are a requirement. There's nothing worse than getting price gouged.

I really like being a parent when Valentines day comes around too. Filling out the little cards with the kids is fun.

I love going through the list of names and hearing what Yuna or Kayla says about each kid in their class. Like
OH... Ethan is getting the BIGGEST one because the other day he shared his puzzle with me. Or, Natalia needs this card because she's really girly so I'll give her the girly one.

That last comment came from Yuna and considering she was giving out Bakugan cards, finding a girly one was quite the task.

She finally settled on one with a picture of a girl in the background. That's as girly as it gets with Bakugan.

So what about you? Do you go all out and make a big deal out of Valentines day or do you like it a little more low key, or perhaps you don't celebrate it at all? Do you get or give flowers? Do you feel like you need to take a shower after buying them because of the horrible price rape?

And lastley... will you be my Valentine?

Happy Anniversary My Love

Today marks the 4th anniversary of marriage between my husband, Rudy, and I.
We've been together for 7 years now and I have to admit... the time has flown
by. We've gone through a lot together. There were some rough times where I wasn't
sure we'd pull though, but in the end we always have. Supporting and loving each
other every step of the way. 4 years is just the tip of the iceberg and. I'm
looking forward to many many more.

Rudy, you are an amazing man. You put up with my craziness daily and that alone is enough to make anyone run for the hills. Of course I've been putting up with that crazy Jimmy Neutron hair you've been sporting lately so I guess we're even. You know, there were a lot of people in this world that hoped our relationship would never make it this far and I'm proud to say they were wrong. We've always been the exception to the rule and I think that's pretty special. I love you from your crazy hair, to your comfy chest, right down to your toes. Thank you for giving me such a beautiful family and such a happy life. You are a great father to both our girls and their lives are better for all you've done for them.

I love you sweetheart.... happy anniversary.

Where the HECK have I been??

I KNOW, I haven't updated in FOREVER. I'm on some crazy blogging hiatus or something. I can't say I haven't had things to write about, it's just that I can't seem to finish writing about them. I start, I do. I've been taking photos, jotting down notes, tweeting, and posting to my flickr page. I've got half written blogs all over my desktop too. It's like some creepy bloggy Frankenstein lab over here. But I keep getting interrupted. I just don't have the time to invest in a quality blog. In fact I have concerns that this won't even get posted. One of the few shows I watch, Chuck, is on and I want to watch it. I've also had a long day at work and I not really in the mood to come anywhere near a computer.

But I'm here because I know I've been putting it off, and I just gotta write something. It's my nature.

And damn.... Chuck just came back from commercial, Mr. Awesome has an explosive ear piece stuck to his head.... and I just want to relax in my husband's arms on the couch and use my laptop as footstool. So I'm gonna.

I'm alive, I'm doing great, the kids are great, hubby is great, and the job is great too. I just can't seem to connect my head with my computer lately. I hope you understand and I really hope you stick around during my little hiatus. I'll be back to blogging once everything settles down a bit.

Bacon Jam

My love for bacon has once again led me to another strange, interesting, and DELICIOUS bacon product. Everyone knows about my love for bacon. I get plenty of great emails, tweets, facebook wall posts, and IMs from friends and family asking me if I've heard of the latest new fangled bacon product.
From bacon alarm clocks to bacon bandages, if it involves bacon I want to know about it. Well the latest bacon buzz has been all about...

Bacon Jam

The best way to describe Bacon Jam is to think of bacon all shredded up in a food processor and then flavored with onions and spices. Its not a liquid but it's also not quite a solid. It's more like a spread. Or maybe a pâté? It tastes like a cross between beef jerky and a pulled pork sandwich, all mixed together with a tangy, but sweet, BBQ sauce. It's as if a strip of bacon and a pulled pork sandwich got into a wrestling match in one of those kiddie pools filled with BBQ sauce - with delicious results.

Can you imagine it?

You might not think it looks delicious, but trust me, looks can be deceiving.

I wasn't sure of the best way to try it, so I created a poll and asked my loyal readers what I should slather it on first and a big juicy hamburger won the poll, taking 60% of the votes!

The people had spoken so I decided that's how I would try it. But I have to be honest, I couldn't resist taking a small bite straight outta the jar before slathering my burger in it's bacony goodness.

WOW! Bacony, barbaquey, pulled porky, beef jerky-y goodness!! It was so good straight up that I couldn't wait to try it on a burger.

I used a kaiser bun, with a lean ground beef patty, topped with ketchup, mustard, mozzarella cheese, tomato, lettuce, and the pièce de résistance... a one inch thick layer of Bacon Jam slathered on the top bun.

Eating it almost brought tears of joy to my eyes. The bacon to burger ratio was the best part. With a normal bacon cheeseburger you don't always get bacon in every bite. With Bacon Jam, the bacon coverage was seamless. A bacon lovers dream. Totally amazing.

If you want to try it for yourself check out skillet street food's website. Be warned, it took almost a month for mine to arrive. Of course I did buy it during the busy Christmas season and I believe skillet street food is a small company. Thankfully it was worth the wait!

Please note: I was NOT paid and did NOT receive any free products for this review. I am not affiliated with skillet street food but would gladly be!

Happy New Year! Cell Service #FAIL

{image credit: delamagente.wordpress.com}

Happy 2010 to everyone out there in blogland!! Last night, when the clock rang 12, I, and about a MILLION other people, sent a text message to someone they loved. The message wouldn't go through. I tried sending "Happy New Year!" 4 or 5 times before finally giving up. I also tried making a call to my friend Amy, but that failed on my first try too. Thankfully the phone worked on my second attempt, but text messaging was totally down. No texts were going out, and no texts were coming in.

We had about 10 people over last night and all of them, on all different networks, were having the same problem. The cellular network was pretty much locked up for at least 15 minutes. Getting something to go through was like trying to understand Dick Clark after a few glasses of wine. Pure luck was involved.

When things did start working again I got strange partial texts from my friends. Then this morning I got a couple of texts from friends saying they just got my message from last night, and it came 3 times in a row.

So what about you? How was your cellular service last night? Who do you have? I'm on AT&T and I know they had issues nationwide...

What was a favorite gift that YOU gave or received this holiday season?

Let's See If I Can Finish This One

I've been busy, and meaning to write a blog. So I sat down a few times, starting writing, and... there was a child wanting a cup of juice, a cat needing to be pet, a present to buy, a show on the DVR I wanted to see, or ooooooo! That shiny object over there!

Bottom line, I kept getting interrupted.

Normally I write my blog in one sitting. Or, at the very most, within a day. But it's been almost a week since I've blogged. And every time I sat down and read what I wrote, before getting distracted, I didn't like it.
So I deleted it and tried to start over, and... OH LOOK! Something shiny again!

Yeah... it's been that kind of a week. The holidays are a hectic time aren't they?

I think it might be time for a guest blogger. I'm totally slacking over here.

So how about you take the spotlight for a bit?

Tell me about your other favorite blogs. Feel free to include your own. If this post is up for an entire week like that last one was... ugh... well at least we'll have something else cool to read.
